Science Year 2023

A wide range of activities are taking place throughout Germany as part of the Year of Science. The "Science Year 2023 - Our Universe" illuminates the big questions of our universe from different perspectives. The Bochum activities are taking place under the motto "Bochum between heaven and earth".

The events are aimed at all interested people in Bochum. Throughout the year, citizens can join experts at exciting events to explore the infinite reaches of our cosmos. Researchers from different disciplines invite the public to understand, explore and marvel at their scientific findings together. Among other things, workshops, readings, exhibitions, film screenings, artistic events and musical performances are offered.

Start with astronaut

To mark the start of the Year of Science, the kick-off event took place at the Planetarium Bochum on February 11, 2023. During the event, the topics and highlights of the Year of Science in Bochum were presented. As a special guest, the former ESA astronaut Gerhard Thiele was on site. He provided insights into space travel in a conversation with Prof. Dr. Susanne Hüttemeister, director of the Bochum Planetarium.

Weeks of the Universe

The highlight of the Year of Science in Bochum will be the "Weeks of the Universe" (June 27 to July 14, 2023). During these weeks, the planets of our solar system will be presented and made visible in downtown Bochum. Mars will play a central role in this in the form of the traveling exhibition "Mars takes place". Around the Christuskirche on the Square of the European Promise, there will be the Planet Weekend from June 29 to July 2. There, among other things, Bochum educational institutions will present their research at the "Market of the Universe." The Science Year 2023 will end in Bochum with a closing ceremony at the Mining Museum.

Cooperation partner

The Science Year in Bochum is presented by Bochum Marketing GmbH. Various Bochum educational and cultural institutions and initiatives are also involved in the organization. The Ruhr University Bochum also participates in the Science Year with various faculties and institutions. Other Bochum project partners include the Bochum Planetarium, the Bochum Observatory, ESERO Germany (European Space Education Resource Office), the city of Bochum, the Bochum public libraries, the independent artists' scene in Bochum and the Bochum Adult Education Center.

Wissenschaftsjahr

Since 2000, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the initiative Wissenschaft im Dialog (Science in Dialog) have regularly organized the Year of Science. Each year, the Year of Science is held under a different motto. The aim of the Year of Science is to initiate an exchange between science and society in order to make research more transparent and accessible and to promote debates on important issues for the future. A large number of German cities participate in the Year of Science with events and activities.
